Lester Sola is appointed Director and CEO of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department

On February 16, Lester Sola was appointed Director and Executive Director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. He will oversee operations at Miami International Airport (MIA) and four general aviation airports (GA) in Miami-Dade County, which together generate $33.7 billion in commercial revenue and support more than 280,000 direct and indirect jobs. MIA leads the way, handling more than 44 million passengers and over two million tons of cargo a year, placing it among the most active international passenger and cargo airports in the United States.

BRAZILIAN TRAFFIC BOUNCES BACK SETS NEW RECORD AT ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

ORLANDO, FL. – Brazilian travelers are coming to Orlando and Central Florida in record numbers. Bouncing back from its nationwide economic hardships, Brazilian travel to Central Florida is poised to reach an all-time high in 2018. A Reuters’ poll in October forecast that Brazil’s GDP would grow from 0.7 percent in 2017 to 2.3 percent in 2018, citing growth in local demand, continuing improvement in household spending and increases in investments and capital expenditure. "Brazil is back! And this resurgence from our third largest international market brings a welcomed boost to the local economy," says Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. "With the recent additional seats from Brazil, the projected economic impact for 2018 is nearly $1 billion, up 111% from 2013." GOL’s new service along with LATAM’s upcoming service to Fortaleza, and capacity increases by Azul and Delta, have helped the number of nonstop seats from Brazil to Orlando reach an all-time high of 486,000 for 2018

BRAZILIAN AIRLINES CARRIED NEARLY 100 MILLION PASSENGERS IN 2017

According to data provided by ANAC, during 2017 Brazilian airlines carried 98,984,771 passengers during 2017, adding national and international flights. The result is an increase of 2.93% over the previous year. There were 8,357,924 passengers on international flights to and from Brazil (+11.7%), and 90,626,847 passengers on domestic flights (+2.2%). In the latter market Gol achieved a share in RPK (passenger-kilometers paid) of 36.2% (+ 0.5%), Latam had 32.6% (-6.2%), Azul 17.8% (+ 4.5%) and Avianca 12.9% (+ 12.8%). In the international market, the participation of Brazilian companies grew by 12% in RPK, while the offer grew by 10.6% in ASK.

Volaris announces new routes from El Salvador to the United States.

The low-cost airline Volaris announced Thursday new routes between El Salvador, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, with fares ranging from $150.

These new routes, which will be available from March onwards, were chosen because they are the destinations where there are the largest number of Salvadorans residing.

ARGENTINA, WITH A HISTORICAL RECORD OF PASSENGERS IN JANUARY

During January, 1,529,000 people used international flights, 14% more than in the same month last year, while 1,206,000 passengers used cabotage flights, 7% more than in January 2017. Taking into account international and cabotage flights, there were a total of 2.73 million passengers, 11% more than in the same month last year. Additionally, in the month of January, 230 thousand passengers flew from/to the exterior in the airports of the interior of the country, which sets another historical record by surpassing last December (192 thousand passengers). The airport that grew most in international traffic this month was the Mendoza airport, which increased by 40% its international passengers. An important growth of passengers was also registered in cabotage routes that do not necessarily pass through Buenos Aires. An example of this is the number of passengers between Córdoba and several airports, such as Salta, with an increase of 110% against January 2017; Jujuy, 64%; Iguazú, 52% or Bariloche, 20%. Other routes with significant growth were Bariloche-El Calafate, with an increase of 15% or Iguazú-Salta, 32%. Regarding how the cabotage market is distributed, Aerolíneas absorbed 48%, Austral 25%, Latam 18%, Andes 8% and Avianca 1%. The international market leader is Latam 26%, followed by Aerolíneas Argentinas 24%, GOL 9%, American 4% and Copa, Iberia, Avianca and Sky with 3%. Other companies: 25%. One noteworthy fact is that the information, prepared by the Argentine Air Navigation Agency (EANA) based on the Integrated Aviation System (SIAC), was received on 1 February, i. e. just 24 hours after the end of the month in question.

JetBlue announces new route between Santiago de los Caballeros and Florida

OPERATING  AN A320 AIRBUS FROM JUNE 14

11 January, 2018 The U. S. airline, JetBlue, today announced another expansion of its service in the Dominican Republic with a daily flight between Cibao International Airport (STI) and Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Florida, effective June 14 of this year, subject to government approval.

This new route, from Santiago to Fort Lauderdale, will allow Dominicans greater access not only to South Florida, but also to a greater number of other cities that JetBlue serves from Fort Lauderdale. Through this expansion of service, Santiago will be connected to four focus cities of JetBlue, which are New York, Boston, San Juan and now Fort Lauderdale. Daily service is also offered from Santiago to Newark, New Jersey.

JetBlue recently announced that it will also begin offering a new daily flight between the Americas International Airport (AILA) and Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, beginning May 3, also subject to government approval. Tickets are on sale for both routes.

This expansion in the JetBlue service highlights our commitment to the Dominican community, giving them greater access to our award-winning service, for which JetBlue is recognized, competitive fares and even more flight options between the Dominican Republic and the U. S.,"said JetBlue's Director of Commerce and International Airports, Giselle Cortes.

JetBlue will operate its flights between Fort Lauderdale and Santiago using its 150-seat Airbus A320 aircraft, which offers the airline's award-winning service and the largest seat space in economy class. The airline also offers free and unlimited refreshment and snack service, as well as complimentary premium Hollywood movies. JetBlue operates from five airports in the Dominican Republic: La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Santiago and Santo Domingo.

ARGENTINA MARKET NEWS: EANA: the number of air passengers grew by 15% in 2017

According to figures derived from statistics compiled and published by the Argentine Air Navigation Agency (EANA) of the Ministry of Transport, in 2017,12.98 million passengers flew within the country and 14.74 million on international flights; there were 27 million people in total, a figure that is 15% higher than that recorded between January and December 2016. People who flew only in cabotage also increased by 15% while international growth was 14%.

COPA will daily connect MDZ (Mendoza, Argentina) with PTY

Two months after the start of the route, it was announced that the airline will daily connect Mendoza province with Central America, the Caribbean and North America through the Hub of the Americas in Panama. From July 16th, the CM 421 flight will depart daily from Mendoza at 1:34 a. m., arriving to Tocumen International Airport in Panama City at 6:30 a. m. The return flight, CM 420 will depart at 3:40 p. m. from Panama, arriving at 12:21 a. m. to "El Plumerillo" Airport. Mendoza is the fourth Copa Airlines route in Argentina, together with Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Rosario.

BRAZIL: Foz do Iguaçu Airport is the fastest growing in the country

In a survey carried out by Infraero, the International Airport of Foz do Iguaçu registered the highest percentage of passengers in the past year in relation to 2016. The number of shipments and landings at the terminal grew 17.64%, being greater than the registrations of 30 airports in Brazil.

Terra das Cataratas received about 2.1 million hits in 2017, more than the previous year's figure of 1.8 million. The number registered in Foz do Iguaçu shows an average increase between Brazilian airports, which registered growth from 2% to 5%, in addition to the remaining passageiros, as in Manaus terminal (-2.04%).

Lufthansa carried 20 million more passengers than in 2016

The Lufthansa Group carried 130 million passengers in 2017,18.6% more than the 109.6 million passengers it had carried in 2016. During the year, 1,130,008 flights were made.
Luis Monreal, Managing Director of Lufthansa Argentina, reported that during 2017 the Lufthansa Group carried 130 million passengers, 20.4 million more passengers than its airlines had used in 2016.
The figure does not only imply a significant 18.6% growth between one year and the next, but it is also an historic record for the Group in terms of passengers transported.
